Mint for Dogs
Mint can help fresh a dog’s breath, act as a natural decongestant and help sooth and calm nervous or anxious dogs. It’s also a good digestive calmant for any dog with an upset tummy.
Mint, or mentha as it’s known to some, is an aromatic, perennial herb that we most associate with cooked lamb. But it is not simply a herb for flavouring food. It also has a long history of use as a medicinal plant dating back to prehistory.
Believed to have its origins in Europe and the Mediterranean region, mint was regarded by the ancient Greeks as the symbol of hospitality and is thought to have been named after Minthe, a nymph from Greek mythology who was turned into the plant by the wife of Hades for having aspirations towards her husband.
It’s believed that the Romans introduced mint and mint sauce to Britain. Thank goodness they did, because lamb just would not taste the same without it!
A natural decongestant and powerful antioxidant with anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal properties, mint is a good source of vitamin A, vitamin C, copper, calcium, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, iron and zinc.
Mint, which was traditionally used to treat digestive disorders in humans, can also aid with a dog’s digestion. It also has anti-aging properties, can help freshen a dog’s breath, act as a natural decongestant, relieve seasonal allergies and act as a calming herb for nervous dogs.
